Blinds vs roller blinds: what is the difference?
The question is a little like asking cars versus sedans. Roller blinds belong to the blind category, so the real choice is roller versus the other styles.
A roller blind is one piece of fabric on a tube. You pull it down or use a motor and it rolls back up. The other common styles work differently:
- Venetian blinds use horizontal slats you tilt to direct light.
- Cellular blinds (also called honeycomb) use pleated fabric with air pockets for insulation.
- Panel glide blinds use flat fabric panels that slide across a track, which suits wide windows and sliding doors.
- Roman blinds fold up into soft pleats and give a tailored fabric look.
Roller blinds vs other blinds at a glance
|
| Roller | Venetian | Cellular | Panel glide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light control | Up or down, three fabric types | Tilt slats for fine control | Soft, by raising or lowering | Slide panels to the amount you want |
| Privacy | Excellent in blockout | Good, varies with slat angle | Very good | Good to excellent |
| Insulation | Good if sealed at the edges | Moderate | Best of the blind types | Moderate |
| Look | Clean, minimal | Classic, crisp | Soft, neat | Modern, wide panels |
| Upkeep | Wipe or dust | Dust slats | Dust or vacuum | Wipe or dust |
| Best for | Most rooms | Kitchens, offices | Bedrooms, cold rooms | Sliding doors, large glass |
The three roller blind fabrics
The fabric changes what a roller blind does, so pick it before you pick a colour.
Blockout rollers cut light and add privacy. They suit bedrooms, media rooms and nurseries.
Light filter rollers soften daylight and keep the room bright. They suit living rooms, dining areas and kitchens.
Sunscreen rollers reduce glare and UV while keeping the view outside. They suit home offices and sun-facing rooms, but give much less privacy at night.
Key point: Sunscreen for the day, blockout for the night. If you need both on one window, a double roller blind combines two fabrics.
Insulation and heat
Windows lose and gain a lot of heat. The Australian Government’s Your Home guide says up to 40% of a home’s heating energy can be lost through windows (Your Home, 2023). A covering helps by holding still air against the glass.
A University of Salford Energy House test funded by the British Blind and Shutter Association measured heat loss through a double-glazed window with different coverings:
| Covering | Heat loss reduction |
|---|---|
| Standard roller blind | 13% |
| Roller with side channels | 22% |
| Blackout honeycomb blind, framed fit | 32% |
This was a UK trade-funded lab test, so treat it as a guide for the pattern and not a prediction for a Tamworth home. The pattern is clear: sealing the edges matters more than the label on the blind. A cellular blind comes close to the best roller. A basic roller leaves more air movement. The Australian Government says the same: snug-fitting blinds trap air, and the benefit falls if air can move around the covering.
The Window Shading Association of Australia’s WincovER rating tool scores four things: colour, how tightly the product is installed, insulation level and light transmission. Ask any supplier how a blind will seal at the edges.
Key point: If you choose a roller for a bedroom that gets cold, ask about a snug fit with side channels, or consider cellular.
Child safety and cords
Any corded blind, roller or Venetian, carries a strangulation risk for young children. The ACCC examined 21 known child deaths from corded internal window coverings in Australia between 1999 and 2018. Six happened after the 2010 mandatory standard, and four of those six involved a cot or bed near a window (ACCC, 2019). Most deaths happened in bedrooms, and a child can lose consciousness in as little as 15 seconds.
Under the current mandatory standards, loose cords must not form a loop of 220 mm or longer below 1,600 mm above the floor, and cleats and guides must sit at least 1,600 mm up (Product Safety Australia). The ACCC names cordless, spring-loaded, tilt-wand and motorised designs as ways to reduce or remove the hazard. Apollo offers motorised roller blinds, which suit wide, high or hard-to-reach windows and remove the cord from the picture.
Key point: In a child’s bedroom, choose cordless or motorised operation and keep the bed away from the window.
Cost and value
No single price is fair for every window. Cost depends on size, fabric, control type and installation. Roller blinds are generally the most affordable way to dress a window, while motorised, double or cellular options cost more. Apollo sells factory direct without third-party mark-ups and makes most of its products in Australia. Ask for a quote on two or three styles for the same window and compare them directly.
Which blind for which room?
| Room | A good choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | Blockout roller or cellular, with curtains over the top | Darkness and a snug seal |
| Living room | Light filter roller or Roman | Soft daylight, tidy look |
| Kitchen | Roller or Venetian | Easy to wipe, slats let you angle light |
| Bathroom | Roller in moisture-friendly fabric, or shutters | Simple and clean |
| Home office | Sunscreen roller | Glare control, daytime view |
| Sliding doors | Panel glide or linked rollers | Cover wide glass neatly |
Common mistake: measuring only the glass. A blind that sits tight inside the frame leaves light gaps, and one that is too small leaves air gaps. Professional measuring avoids both.

FAQs
What is the difference between blinds and roller blinds? Roller blinds are one type of blind. The wider category also includes Venetian, cellular, Roman and panel glide blinds. A roller uses a single sheet of fabric that rolls onto a tube, while the others use slats, pleats or sliding panels.
Are roller blinds good for bedrooms? Yes, in blockout fabric. They reduce light and add privacy. For the darkest room, add blockout curtains over the blind or ask about a fit that limits light gaps at the edges.
Which blinds insulate best? Cellular blinds are the best-performing blind type in US Department of Energy simulation.
Are roller blinds cheaper than Venetian blinds? Roller blinds are generally an affordable choice, but fabric, size and controls change the price a lot. Get quotes for two or three styles on the same window to compare properly.
Are roller blinds safe around children? Any blind with a loose cord can be dangerous. The ACCC counted 21 child deaths from corded internal window coverings between 1999 and 2018. Choose cordless or motorised roller blinds, and keep cots and beds away from windows.
What is the difference between blockout, light filter and sunscreen roller blinds? Blockout blinds cut light and add privacy. Light filter blinds soften daylight. Sunscreen blinds cut glare and UV but give less privacy at night.
Do roller blinds work on sliding doors? Yes, often as linked rollers. Panel glide blinds are the other popular option, because the panels slide across the glass.
Can roller blinds be motorised? Yes. Apollo offers motorised roller blinds. They help with wide, high or hard-to-reach windows.
How do I clean roller blinds? Dust them regularly and wipe marks with a damp cloth. Your Apollo installer can explain care for your fabric.
Do you service towns outside Tamworth? Yes. Apollo Blinds Tamworth services Armidale, Gunnedah, Walcha, Narrabri, Moree, Glen Innes, Inverell and many other towns in the region.
