How to Choose Blinds for Your Home April 5, 2018 You know you need blinds to turn down the sun’s brightness certain times during the day. But how do you choose blinds for your home? Here are some tips to guide you through the process:
How Much Light Do You Want to Let In? Shades and window blinds come in a variety of options when it comes to light control. In your bedroom, you may want a blockout window treatment that blocks most of the sun’s rays. If you have an irregular work schedule or if your room’s windows face the early morning sun, these blinds will probably be the best choice for you. On the other hand, if you only want to filter out some of the light, such as in your kitchen or dining room, light filtering blinds may be a better option. In these rooms, you want sunlight to illuminate the space so you can see better, but you don’t want the sun’s full glare staring you in the face over breakfast.
Slats or No Slats? When you have blinds with slats, you can choose the level of light you want in the room. You can even adjust their tilt to see what’s happening outside, yet still, control the level of light in the room. Venetian or vertical blinds, both with slats, work well to adjust the light level. Vertical blinds are especially appropriate when you have sliding doors that you need to access at will. All you need to do is to pull them back, and you can step outside. If, however, you want energy-efficient cellular blinds, the trim, tailored look of roller blinds or elegant Roman blinds, you won’t be able to adjust the level of sight or light with slats. You’ll need to pull the blinds up at least part way to see out of the window.
Do You Need Protection from the Heat or Cold? Cellular shades are your best bet if you need to up the level of your home’s insulation. These specially designed blinds have honeycomb cells embedded inside them, trapping air inside, slowing the air’s passage from the inside to the outside, or vice versa. These energy-savers come in cordless and motorised versions as well—even for skylights—so you can install them anywhere you need extra insulation.
