Plantation shutters vs roller blinds: key differences
A roller blind is a single sheet of fabric that winds onto a tube. A plantation shutter is a framed set of louvred panels that tilt, fold or slide. Roller blinds are flat and minimal. Shutters add structure and texture.
Style
Roller blinds suit modern, minimal rooms and come in many colours, textures and prints. They almost disappear when rolled up. Shutters become a permanent feature of the window and suit coastal, traditional and contemporary homes. For a clean look on a budget, choose roller blinds. For architecture, choose shutters.
Light control and privacy
Roller blinds come as blockout (total darkness), light filtering (soft daylight with privacy) and sunscreen (glare control with the view kept). Shutters tilt to any angle, so you can hold privacy and daylight together at any hour. Roller blinds are better for darkness, and shutters are better for fine adjustment.
Key point: if one room must be fully dark, such as a nursery or media room, choose a blockout roller. Shutters alone will not get there.
Durability and maintenance
Roller fabric can fade, fray or stain, and the mechanism wears with daily use. Shutters are rigid and last longer. Both clean easily: wipe shutters with a damp cloth, spot clean the roller fabric, and replace the blind when it ages.
Airflow
A lowered roller blind blocks air. Shutters can stay angled open to let breezes in while shading the room.
Insulation and energy
Windows can lose up to 40% of a home’s heating energy and let in up to 87% of its heat gain (YourHome, Australian Government, 2023). Both products help, in different ways.
In summer, reflective roller blinds and close-weave screens reduce solar heat well. The NRC Canada modelling study found closed typical interior blinds cut solar heat gain by 40 to 50%, and reflective close-weave roller screens saved up to 25% of annual cooling energy (NRC Canada, 2011). Treat those numbers as indicative for Australia.
In winter, fit and an air layer reduce heat loss. YourHome recommends "snugly fitted blinds and curtains with pelmets that trap a layer of still air next to the window". A Cornell fact sheet measured an inside-mounted roller shade with small side gaps at 24 to 31% heat-loss reduction over single glazing, and a reflective roller with side tracks at 55% (Cornell Cooperative Extension, 2000). In a UK whole-house test, well-fitting shutters cut heat loss by 64% on single-glazed sash windows (Historic England, 2017). The three tests used different set-ups, so do not compare their numbers directly.
Climate sets the priority. In Canberra, winter heat retention comes first. In Sydney and coastal NSW, summer solar control matters more. For west-facing windows, add an external awning, because YourHome notes internal coverings are much less effective than stopping the sun before it hits the glass.
Key point: a tight fit with small side gaps matters more than the product type. A roller with side tracks can outperform a loose-fitting shutter.
Cost and long-term value
Roller blinds are among the least expensive made-to-measure coverings, which suits full-house fit-outs and rentals. Shutters cost more per window and last longer. Apollo manufactures most of its products in Australia and sells factory direct, with no third-party mark-ups on either. Pricing depends on window size, fabric or material and mounting, so a free in-home measure and quote gives real numbers.

Pros and cons of plantation shutters
Advantages:
- Long lifespan and rigid construction
- Fine control of light, privacy and airflow
- No pull cord
- Strong winter insulation when fitted tightly
Drawbacks:
- Higher upfront cost
- Cannot black out a room alone
- Folded panels take up wall space
Pros and cons of roller blinds
Advantages:
- Low entry cost
- True blockout and sunscreen options
- Slim and unobtrusive
- Easy to motorise and quick to replace
Drawbacks:
- Shorter lifespan than shutters
- Fabric can fade or stain
- Less airflow control
- Corded and chained versions are a child safety risk
Choosing the right window treatment
| Room | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | Shutters, or sunscreen rollers | Glare control with daylight |
| Main bedroom | Blockout roller blinds | Total darkness for sleep |
| Kids’ bedroom | Cordless blockout rollers or shutters | No loose cords, still dark |
| Bathroom and laundry | PVC or composite shutters, or PVC rollers | Moisture resistance |
| Kitchen | Shutters or wipe-clean rollers | Easy cleaning |
| Home office | Sunscreen rollers | Glare control, view kept |
| Sliding doors | Track-mounted shutters or wide rollers | Wide opening, daily use |
Mixing works well. Use rollers in bedrooms and shutters in living areas, and keep the colour palette consistent.
Materials
Shutters come in PVC for humid rooms and busy homes, timber for living areas and feature windows, composite for warmth with durability, and aluminium for exposed spaces.
Roller fabrics range from polyester and PVC-coated types that resist moisture and fading to woven fabrics with more texture. In bathrooms and laundries choose a wipeable fabric that tolerates moisture. YourHome warns that condensation causes "damp, mould and rot".
Motorisation
Roller blinds are the easiest product to motorise, which helps on large or high windows. Apollo offers motorised window coverings for automated control. See Apollo’s motorisation options and ask your consultant whether shutters can be motorised for your windows.
Child safety
The ACCC investigated 21 deaths of children in Australia caused by corded internal window coverings between 1999 and 2018, with none known since 2014 (ACCC, 2019). The 2010 standard roughly halved the yearly rate, from 1.36 deaths to 0.67, but did not end the risk. Most deaths involved toddlers in bedrooms, and a child can lose consciousness in as little as 15 seconds.
Key point: choose cordless, spring-assisted or motorised roller blinds, and keep cots and beds away from windows. Shutters tilt by a mechanism with no pull cord.
Sliding doors and specialty windows
Wide roller blinds suit large glass, though very wide ones can sag or need heavier tubes. Shutters can be configured for sliding doors and large windows with the right track and panel layout, and custom shapes suit arched windows. Ask your consultant to check the layout at the measure.
Layering
A shutter with a blockout roller behind it gives you both. The shutter handles privacy and airflow by day, and the roller delivers darkness at night. It pays off in bedrooms and rarely in kitchens or bathrooms.
Frequently asked questions
We’re fitting out a whole house on a budget. Are roller blinds the smarter choice? For secondary rooms, usually yes. Roller blinds cost less and offer true blockout. Many people spend on shutters for the main living areas and use rollers elsewhere. A free quote shows the price gap for your windows.
Which keeps the house cooler in summer? Reflective roller blinds and close-weave screens do well. A Canadian study found up to 25% less annual cooling energy with reflective close-weave roller screens. Shutters help too, and an external awning on west-facing glass does more than either.
Which is warmer in winter? Close-fitting shutters trap still air and perform strongly. A roller with side tracks can also do well. Fit decides most of the result.
Which is best for blocking light in a bedroom? A blockout roller blind. Shutters reduce light but cannot fully black out a room alone, so add a blockout roller behind them if you need both.
Are roller blinds safe for a toddler’s room? Only if cordless or motorised. The ACCC recommends cordless alternatives to corded products. Shutters have no pull cord.
Do roller blinds last as long as shutters? Not usually. Fabric fades and mechanisms wear, so expect to replace them sooner.
What suits a bathroom or laundry? PVC or composite shutters, or a wipeable, moisture-tolerant roller fabric.
I manage several properties. Which is easier to maintain? Roller blinds are quick and cheap to replace between tenants. Shutters need less upkeep but cost more upfront.
What suits sliding doors? Track-mounted shutters or wide rollers, depending on how often you use the door. Ask for advice at the measure.
Does Apollo cover my area, and is there a warranty? Apollo services NSW and the ACT, including Sydney, and backs its products with a warranty.
