Most of the heat in a summer room arrives through the glass, which is why stopping the sun outside the window works better than cooling the room once the heat is already in. The research is consistent. In the Sydney study, an external shade on a north-facing window cut annual cooling demand by 71.8% with just a 0.8% rise in heating load (Sorooshnia et al., Buildings, 2023). A US Department of Energy laboratory study found that a fixed awning cut annual solar heat gain through glass by about 52% in New Delhi and 53% in Denver (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 2017), so the effect holds across very different climates.
The Australian Government’s Your Home guide explains why: direct summer sun delivers roughly the heat of a bar radiator onto every square metre of glass, and effective shading can block up to 90% of it. That matters for your power bill, because heating and cooling together use about 40% of household energy in the average Australian home. It also matters for comfort: in a 2025 survey of 1,011 Australians, 87% said their home gets too hot.

A fixed awning blocks winter sun almost as much as summer sun. In the US Department of Energy study, a fixed awning cut Denver’s winter solar heat gain by 58% and its summer gain by 43% (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 2017). If you want winter warmth, choose a retractable folding arm awning or a Ziptrak outdoor blind. If you want permanent, low-maintenance cover, a fixed cafe, canopy or Colourbond steel awning is the better fit.
Fabric choice affects both sun protection and how long your awning lasts. Canvas and coated fabrics can provide up to 99% UV protection, but typically have a shorter lifespan than shade cloth (SunSmart, Cancer Council Victoria). Under the Australian Standard AS 4174:2018, shade cloth should have at least 80% UVE, with Effective at 80 to 90.9%, Very Effective at 91 to 94.9% and Most Effective at 95% and above. Whichever fabric you choose, ask for its UV rating on the quote.
